Typhoid Fever

Disease: A bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi, prevalent in many parts of the world with poor sanitation.

Symptoms: High fever, weakness, stomach pain, headache, loss of appetite, sometimes a rash.

Vaccines:

  • Injectable (Vi polysaccharide vaccine)
    • Primary dose: Single dose given intramuscularly at least 2 weeks before travel.
    • Booster: Every 2 years if continued exposure.
  • Oral (Live attenuated vaccine)
    • Primary dose: 3 capsules taken orally every other day (days 0, 2, and 4) with the last dose at least 1 week before travel.
    • Booster: Every 5 years if continued exposure.

Side Effects: Fever, headache, nausea, abdominal pain.

Risks if Contracted: Severe illness, intestinal perforation, high mortality without treatment.
