Meningitis B
Disease: A serious bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup B, leading to inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord.
Symptoms: Sudden high fever, stiff neck, severe headache, nausea/vomiting, sensitivity to light (photophobia), and a characteristic dark purple or red rash that doesn’t fade when a glass is pressed against it.
Vaccine: Meningococcal Group B Vaccine (Recombinant proteins/Inactivated)
Dose Schedule:
- Primary dose: Two doses given intramuscularly 1-6 months apart.
- Booster: The need for a booster has not yet been determined
Side Effects: Swelling at the injection site, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, and occasionally a fever.
Risks if Contracted: Rapid progression to sepsis (blood poisoning), permanent brain damage, hearing loss, limb amputations due to tissue death, and a fatality rate of approximately 10–15% even with treatment.
