Tetanus
Disease: Is a serious bacterial infection caused by Clostridium tetani, contracted through wounds contaminated with the bacteria, often found in soil, dust, and animal faeces.
Symptoms: Fever, sweating, rapid heart rate. Muscle stiffness and spasms, typically starting in the jaw and neck, difficulty swallowing, and stiffness in the abdominal muscles.
Vaccine: Tetanus vaccines are often combined with diphtheria and polio vaccines.
Dose Schedule
- Primary dose: Single dose given intramuscularly.
- Booster: Recommended every 10 years.
Side Effects: Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site, mild fever, tiredness, and headache.
Risks if Contracted: These include fractures due to severe spasms, pulmonary embolism, pneumonia, and prolonged hospitalization. Recovery from severe tetanus can take several weeks to months, often requiring intensive care and prolonged rehabilitation.
